about

This song is mainly based around the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 in New York City. I learned about it as a child, and found myself slightly obsessed with it. On a Saturday afternoon in March 1911 the building set ablaze killing several hundred young immigrant girls/factory workers. No one could get to the 9th floor in time - and some girls had to jump to their death from the 9th floor, and above. - I found myself sort of relating to the feeling of being trapped without rescue. So there is definitely a personal side to this song as well.

lyrics

When I was just a little girl
I learned about the fire
OH, the horror!

Hundreds of young girls
leapt to their death
They came to America working for .25 cents

AND ALL THE KINGS HORSES
AND ALL THE KINGS MEN
COULDN'T PUT THEIR BROKEN HEARTS
BACK TO TOGETHER AGAIN

CHORUS:
Knock, knock
Number Nine
no one could reach you in time
we're sorry for your loss

Ashes to Ashes
all those lovely lasses
yeah, we're notifying the masses
we're sorry for your loss

Saturday morning
Rise and shine
Feeling cold
Flashing memories
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock
In your mind

You're not thinking clearly
All the lines are blurred
Trying to remember
Names and figures
Plan B take action
Activate transmission
Before you run out of time

And the three blind mice
are calling me, calling me, calling me, calling me....

CHORUS:
Knock, knock
Number Nine
no one could reach you in time
we're sorry for your loss

Ashes to Ashes
all those lovely lasses
yeah, we're notifying the masses
we're sorry for your loss
