about

Based off of a photograph I found in my Grandmother's closet as a child - this song was written as an homage to my family history. My Grandmother is a Holocaust survivor, and my best friend. I grew up listening to stories of war, hunger, death, but this photo (specifically) always troubled me. It was taken in a Swedish liberation camp - a bunch of children with sunken eyes, who couldn't have been more than 12-18 years old looked as though they were 60 years older. They looked like animals packed behind that fence. There was fear and distrust in their eyes, and as a child myself the photo always haunted me.

lyrics

and in their faces
you see their mothers, sisters and brothers
who floated away
the ones that were youngest
aged over 60 years
now frightened by their freedom
see the distrust in their tears

and you can see
all of their dreams
burned to the ground
and you can deny
the horrifying sight
i'm sure you'll sleep well tonight

when i was young
i was shown photos
of bittersweet liberation
it broke me in two
pictures of children
fenced in like cattle
oh what kind of battle
could they have deserved?

and you can see
all of their dreams
scattered around
and you can deny
the horrifying sight
i'm sure you'll sleep well tonight

i've heard the stories
and, i've seen the damage
the terrible baggage
that they've had to bear
and in my heart
I'll always find them
a family history
as deep as the earth
